Managing stakeholders continues to be a key area where many project managers identify as more challenging or complex as well as with conflicts in decision making and changes in scope.

1. Planning, planning and planning

In my opinion the most important aspect of project management is the initial planning and yet this is often the part that gets rushed. So many times I have been engaged to build a #schedule, a #roadmap or a project plan only to have the client try to rush the process before all the information can be collected. I think this can limit the successful outcome of the schedule and is perhaps why so many projects continue to fail.

My Planning Process

I have had many assignments where the whole of business transformation change needs to be planned across several years. My planning process involves me reading everything I can find including contracts, interviewing key stakeholders, observing the organisations culture and process and a workshop or two to confirm scope. Over a period of two to three weeks, I find a pattern emerging and start to work out how the 'work' can be implemented. Recognising how work needs to be put into chunks, programs, projects or activities and then I work on a basic scope statement to flesh out the ideas. I then socialise this scoping statement to see if we are on the right track. I find that the key areas that are common to all the roadmaps and larger programs are; #People (Culture), #Technology Enablers, #Customer and Supporting #Growth. In my experience, all the programs and projects usually fit within one of these categories under the portfolio or program roadmap.
